Pre Blast Survey Forms and Reports

A building inspector during a pre-blast survey in NH, ME, MA, NH.

What is a pre blast survey?

A pre blast survey is a survey conducted before any blasting or construction or demolition activity that creates significant seismic activity. It is primarily used to assess the existing conditions of the site and nearby structures, utilities, and environmental factors. The purpose of a pre blast surveys is to document the condition of surrounding buildings, infrastructure, and environmental features before any potential blasting activities or construction and demolition activities.  To reduce liability these surveys should be done by a third party.  This survey requires two site visits, before and after the blasting or construction and demolition process that creates significant seismic activity.

What our pre-blast survey includes

Pre blast, construction, and demolition surveys will eliminate 98 percent of nuisance blasting claims and is an easy way to combat claims. Always use a knowledgeable independent inspector when sourcing pre blast surveys. Structure Check LLC has a very detailed inspection process when it comes to pre-blast surveys. Structure Check specializes in the evaluation of structures within the required range of any blast site or construction or demolition process that creates significant seismic activity. Once Structure Check gets the property's address and owner information we will make all attempts to set up the inspection day/time. Our inspection includes the evaluation and documentation of the following:

1. All windows/doors. Monitor for cracks. Inspect if plum/square before blasting.

2. Foundation cracks/settling. If present before blasting/construction/demo cracks are measured with crack gauges. Foundations are measured with lasers to determine if settling caused any abnormal settling.

3. Inspection of electrical service before and after blasting.

4. Inspection of fuel supply systems (propane tanks, oil tanks, public supply systems) for gas/oil line leaks and disturbances (level/plum).

5. Inspection of the water supply line and drain piping. Pre and post-blasting/construction/demolition for leaks and damages.

6. Coolant line inspection on all heat pump and AC systems. Make sure no significant structure movement/vibration causes damage or loose connections.

7. Inspection of all flooring and walls for cracks (tile, drywall, plaster) or separation (wood floors, laminate floors) before and after blasting/construction/demolition.

8. Environmental evaluation. Make sure no trees, water, or ground movement causes damage to any system that the structure depends on to function properly.

9. Seismographs: Instruments used to measure ground vibrations and seismic activity before, during, and after blasting operations are set up.

10. (add-on service) Noise levels. A site base/peak noise level is gathered before and during blasting/construction/demolition. This is an add-on service since it requires a site visit during blasting/construction/demo. Structure Check normally visits pre & post-blasting/construction/demolition.

11. (Add-on service) Water testing. If the structure depends on well water it is highly recommended a water test is done before and after blasting/construction/demolition to ensure the groundwater is not affected.

12. (Add-on service) Radon air levels. Significant blasting/construction/demolition processes can crack the ledge below the structure causing radon gas to leak into basement spaces. A radon air test should be done 48 hours before blasting/construction/demolition and after blasting/construction/demolition.

13. (Add-on) Moasure GPS 3D measurements and reports. Providing clients with a 3D model of the land.

14. (Add-on) Air quality pumps can be set up to gather data.

15. Customizable reports. Need specific data or inspection services unique to a project? Contact us to get started. If we can not do it we can handle the planning and scheduling to get it done during our site visits.
